Makes me feel old this but turtlespeed is now in its 25th year! I know its changed a bit since then but it was sometime in the summer of 1985 that I thought of the name. The name came from the fact that many scooter shops and clubs had 'speed' at the end. Locally we had EugeneSpeed and Alspeed but there were many more round the country. Originally my first scooter was called Snailspeed but due to the lack of plastic snails available to stick on our mudguards we changed it to Turtlespeed and stuck Turtlewax air fresheners on our mudguards! Simon went through more of them than the others cos he kept crashing! The first Turtlespeed car was a mk2 escort 1.1 that was Simons first car in Jewish racing beige but i suppose the first proper car we had was my Hillman Super Minx Convertible that me and Si used to cruise in wearing our hawaiian shirts and listening to surf music. Changed a lot since then, wonder where we'll be after 50 years. Turtlespeed 1
Happy 25th birthday / anniversary to Turtlespeed from all at The East coast pirates we hope we will last that long, well done to all, see you soon, Steve.

I really want to argue you with Mark, but when looking at the 2nd picture I am young and thin!!!
The only advantage I have is I am thinner and younger than you!!!!
ps. If Jo makes any more shirts can she get mine from camping and general!!!
Blimey, didnt realise it was that old. Well done, just shows what a good non judgemental chilled out friendly comune this is. Congrats and many more years of good humoured lunacy ahead.
When with Mitch in '85 and '86 we used to hang around the top end of hamlet court road by the benches and go to frank and pauls northern soul nights at the Blue Boar
After that Mitch moved to portugal for a few years and I became a dirty Scooter Scum psycobilly!!!
I used to drink in the railway (opposite southend central station) during the week and saturday and sundays and pink toothbrush in Rayleigh on a friday night which was scooter boy night!!!!
I know of the town house but didnt drink in it.....I think that was Reg speed with Gronnie!!!!
At the time we became part of the A13 and drank in the Railway....apart from scooter runs where we always drank together.......
Because of the trouble at scooter runs we had to become affiliated or the police turned us away so all the clubs in southend joined forces and become southend scooter club and affiliated to the National Association of Scooter Clubs....that must of been '87 or '88.
I passed my car test in Nov '86 but didnt get a car untill 88 and stopped going to any runs etc in 89, where the gravel pit on southend sea front became our new home, although the boy racers couldnt get there head around our surf music and fashion sense!!!........
Did street machine's motorvation show in 89 and fell in love with winstons ford powered P5 and said one day I will have one!!!!!!
