i think your thinking about hematite. its a stone, which when polished up looks like a dark chrome. which ive heard being called 'black chrome' before.

as far as i know, its not something that can be a coating, like chrome is.
cause, being a stone, its not able to hold a current, so electrolysis is out of the question (thats how chrome is layerd onto the metal)

it is just hard to describe a mate once had a lighter it that colour and it was metal not a stone but those pics about look bloody damm close.
i was informed by another source it si done by a form of annodising.
