Some may have read my interview with Gary Constable in Ultra VW magazine back in Feb.
I thought that I would show a few of his designs and cars that he has worked on, and felt that this may interest a lot of you.
Gary now resides in Kentucky and draws concept Hot Rods/Street Rods where a few of his concepts have graced the cover of Street Rodder, Rod and Custom. He designs T shirts for Billet Specialties and Gary sent over an original concept drawing and the magazine "Street Rod Builder" with his creation built and on the cover of Dec 08 issue, which was really cool (get some pics of that on here soon from the mag).
Gary originally came from Basildon Essex, and work with Pete Majamso (spl) in Camden and on cars like Nick the Cakes Model A Pick up. He has had articles in Street Machine when he added pink flames over the black body of the A when Nick was revamping the rod. He used to cruise about in a slammed fastback with graphics laid on at Pete's in Braintree.
In between this Gary was a partner in an inspirational VW paint and bodyshop called Thump! Thump! working alongside my other good friend Jay Townsend. They built the legendary "Billabug" (billabong surfwear interior) and "Targa" first Targa concept bug with lots of innovative tricks.
Gary was responsible for the original drawing of "What the Haye" and was built by Boyd Coddington and sold at Barretts for $540k.
Anyway here is some pics of stuff Gary has been doing.
Below..
Heres an example of drawing to actual build, this car was in the great 8 at Autorama 2008. Gene Elpers' '47 Chevy truck, finally finished after 7 years.
What an Awesome talent! I remember Thump Thump,Billabug and the Targa Bug,didn't it have the vented cowl between the rear window and rear deck lid filled in and the word "Targa" written into it? Those VW days were a revelation,Bug jam,Run To the Sun etc were taking off,i did a Cal looker for a freind of a freind and that was it-I was inundated with Bugs and Splits,I couldn't keep up with em! couldn't complain though, good times
