Satin black gives cars a tough, mean, ratty look whereas metallics make them look a bit classier. Problem with metallics is they dont always sit well on a classic, got to choose your colour carefully. Also satin can hide a multitude of sins where shiny paint shows every mark, high/low spot, bad repairs etc. Shiny paint needs a hell of a lot more prep if its going to look good.

what is it about satin black ?id like to know the reason for satin black on custom cars.my prefrance is metalics genraly dark.
Might have already been posted, but found in one of Sniper's Kustom Car books it says about the lads during the 40's & 50's customizing their cars, this could take months or even years as they were also using their cars as their daily drives so couldn't keep them off the road for prolonged periods of time. The tell-tale signs of a custom under metamorphoses was panels painted in primer. (might have got that wrong, so sorry if I have!)
So I guess part of the love of matt & satin paint comes back to this. Several people end up giving their ride a quick blast of satin primer whilst they decide what colour paint their car or save up for a decent paint job .
This Hudson belonging to UKK's Rupe is a good example of this, after it was first chopped it was painted satin grey with green flames and recently re-done in black while he makes his mind up over the colour.
And of course some people just love satin paint for it's ease Each to their own I guess and the show field would love a dull if all the cars were painted the same.
Have a look at this book for more info, brilliant book. Must get the pages laminated mind you. PORN!!!
I'll see if i can dig out some photo's of satin painted cars later and post 'em up if you want.
the more you guys tell me the more im starting to come round.i dnt think itl be done by april run ,so the body will still look shabby ,the pics are very inspiring giggles ,not sure about the stealth paint big black.lol.

Sniper raised a valid point about satin paint earlier today, orginally the cars would have painted in dark colours and over time lost their shiney finishes, so they appeared in a matt finish like the Imperial sat on our driveway at the moment.
