Ideas for Petes MK2 A40

As it says at the top....post ya ideas of how what you would do to Petes new ride if you owned it.I know of one that`s been chopped n have seen a pickup at the Nats a couple of years back.

I"ll go first n suggest that Pete should give up now n sell it me at a vastly reduced price !

HAHAHA like the idea chris but never gonna happen mate, its taken me this long to get a classic motor and now i got one its not going anywhere until its finished, I already done a few small restoration jobs on classic stationary engines and a TED20 tractor and had a few old classics with my uncle when he was alive but now i got my own to focus on and waste my time money blood and sweat on !!

I think you should sell me the seats out of your old humber ! Im sure theres enough hide on them to make mine look presentable !! lol

Omg ! Thats almost the exact Idea I had lastnight

Whitewall Tyres
Slammed On Its Ass on the Original Rims With Chrome Centrehubs
Satin Black
Subtle Pinstripping
All the Chrome Redone, Delocked/Dehandled and On Poppers, Billet Mirrors

Interior retrimmed in White/Cream Leather with red piping and red rooflining and carpets

Did think about side exit pipes and twinchoke webbers also ??

Chrome stalks and switches ? Chain Link Steering wheel or nice chrome and wood effect ( Mahogany ) one ?

Let us know what you think, any constructive or non constructive critisism welcome as I really dont wanna make a complete hash of this car !

how about getting "chop shop and Leepo to do something"

You could go the matt black route whites walls etcs

BUT howabout

a 1960's sytle racer, spot lights, tapes on the lights etc matt black bonnet
a set of 185/70/14 all round

Cool

Did think about the racerstyle but tbh I had racestyle cars before and want something different, I really want a Custom Classic, Id like to be able to attend the Nats and do the felixstowe run ( If i can get entry ) thats my main ambition as always seen the cars go past but never been on it and always looked pretty good. I do love satinblack cars because they are cheap to do and cheap to get looking nice and upkeep if they get scratched about etc.

I really dont know which direction to go with it

Got to say, there is something about that old 60's rally look!!!

Depends on what you are looking for.

Do you want something stock, something sporty or something kustom.

Not sure a chain steering wheel would suit, but satin black with pin stripe would.  The interior could be red like mitchs old candy minor, that would suit it.

Another quick question before I pick the car up in the week I have been busy ordering tools to assist me in the restoration, but does anyone know if i will need a set of Whitworth spanners or AF ? I have like 10mm etc but I no longer have my olf britool set as it was stolen when my garage got broken into along with my dupont mixingscheme :( compressor and sprayguns.

I obviously dont wanna buy a expensive set again unless i know im gonna def need it on the resto

Cheers

Pete

Hi mate

Ideally would like to restore it to original spec, but i know that parts are gonna be a pig to source, Did think chainlink may look silly would be a case of looking at one at a show to see wether i like them or not, im loving the satin ideas but something in the back my head is saying stick to standard and keep it original and as genuine as I can

Cheers

Pete

You should just need imperial (7/16  1/2 etc) your metric (10mm etc) wont be any good on a car that age.

Not a fan of the interior ideas. Pimp-my-ride eat your heart.

Sometimes it's better to live with what you've got a for while, do the essential maintence and bodywork about really think about what you plan to do. Mike did that with our old Rapier, but then just as he was doing the mods to it we discovered the blue snipe was for sale so it had to go.

Will deffinately be having a close look at it when it arrives, will prob just get some seat covers till got the cash to get it done properly

will get a graphic made up for rear screen that says WORK IN PROGRESS !

and do little bits to it as and when I can afford

Then if i plan it right next winter and when the Mot runs out I can get it actually in the garage and rubbed down, in primer and then off to the bodyshop for a respray, get the interior sorted before that though if i can

Strip and rebuild the brakes, paint the underneath sort any welding out/waxoil and protect

other than that I aim to use her and enjoy her for the time being

Very simple but very nice, although I prefer the older Somersets and Devon's as they've got a few more cuvres wink.gif

By the way, that look will be a no-no for the old crocks run.

or you could just do it up as a sleeper
dont know if your keeping the running gear standard or what but if your keeping it original but want a little more power just find yourself a 1275 lump out of a midgit that will fit straight in without to much hasslewink

I wouldn't go chain link, really uncomfortable, mahogany is only for the over 60's that smoke pipes.
If you want 60's mild kustom go standard morris minor banjo in red metalflake...(i got one you can have), or small mountney style....(I got one of them too)!
let me know if you want either one.
Also, standard rims on the front with banded standard rims on the back, proper 60's street racer style!
I'd leave the paint as it is and spray the wheels black.
This sort of stylee and image should suit it...
Rough and ready!

Just got her home ! Was a interesting drive

First impressions :

Body tidy enough, bonnet has bad rust on the corner, bootlid needs attention but nothing too major, will prob replace bonnet and weld up bootlid where theres a small hole, dent in passenger door but hoping i can stress the panel with a heatgun and pop that out, Brakes are well ummm INTERESTING to say the least ! they seem to pull to oneside ? Ill strip them and try and get them working properly ( can get new cylinders for 15quid ) so may just use new parts and rebuild

Underneath looks solid, battery tray and front end looks good, sills and floorpan dont look too bad

Interior is not as bad as expected, the seats are ripped and the carpets nearly non existent ! underneath the carpets the floor has some light surface rust ( again will sort this and waxoil )

Engine seems to rev fine, gearbox is good selects all gears smoothly doesnt seem to clunk or jam or grind no nasty noises from the syncromesh ( i take it it has one ? )
All the buttons and switches work

Passenger door catch needs a good oiling as the lock doesnt clunk to hold door fully shut ( again will sort this ) maybe fit new lockset as again there cheap enough

Bumpers have been painted black and look GAY ! why do people ruin good chrome by painting over it ?? C*cks ! ( appologies if your one of these people who would paint good chrome out with black poundland paint that flakes off and looks ****e afterwards )
Im hoping i can get the worste off and maybe get them rechromed alongwith the doorhandles etc etc

Dashboard good, no nasty smells deadmice, wiring looks ok but will prob rewire for safety sake

Tyres all good, windows good and lights good

Worste things that need adressing are :

Brakes/interior and chrome/paint

Other than that shes useable wont win beauty contests yet but then again neither will I ! So am seriously considering the Ratlook satin approach purely on the principle that its gonna prob end up costing me a shedloads in spares to get it looking like a Restored classic ever again !

You'll be lucky! But worth asking what spares are available.

It's mainly the car clubs that get the parts remanufactured for cars like that, the Humber Club have had some repair panels and few other body panels redone for the Snipes and Sceptres, but cars like our '53 Hawk it's a case of DIY or getting hold of a scrap car and trying to find the part you need.

Goodjob i trained as a bodywork technician then, and spent a couple years working for a company in beccles called excalibur engineering who restore classic aston martins, so learnt a lot of my skills there including lead loading etc, will see what I can source nationally, if not then I may have to build a boot and bonnet / I can get skin kits just not complete bonnet unit

Decided to take her off the road until shes done, I made a space in my garage and have started stripping all the brightwork off her, I have found a supplier of a new bootpanel, am gonna cut out all the corrosion and replace with new panels ( Some of which i will need to shape myself ) Bonnet i can get hold of a outerskin, I will have to reskin the original one ( Shouldnt be too bad ) all the brightworks being sent off for rechroming as soon as I get it all stripped, the panels will then recieve a Sodablast to remove any inperfections and get it back to baremetal and any corrosion will be sorted before I even attempt to get the panels straight and in primer

Do you know a reasonably local firm for soda blasting then? got contacts for various media-blasting but all seem to be midlands based or to the moon and back.Regular blasting's too harsh for what I want and get the wrong monkey on the lance and the tubs blown inside out (chassis already done). Asking as me Dodge panel van needs a thrash with summat soon.

Buper..

Bah humbug!

I`m in agreement with Mark.

Run it round as is until your sure that you are happy with it.If you really feel like getting a little done just paint the wheels red & get a chequred roof sticker for Minis of the Bay of E........Better still, get two n put one on the bonnet.

I read earlier on that you wern`t too sure about East/West n North/South engine swops....If you can scrounge an old Mini block of Charlie or indeed anywhere you"ll see that all the blocks are basically the same. So,ifyou can find an ealy Cooper set up you should be able to get it all in and the result would be "Period" Same with MGB which is a tad bigger at 1800.....

Alternatively, theres always the Ford option........Twin Cam pinto,5 speed box n a suitable back axle

OR,just sell the lot too me at a huge loss n pretend ya Father Christmas..

Can you deliver ?

Already in the garage, brightwork off, windows out, interior stripped, panels being patched next week ( provided I get the time ) gonna turn it on its side and clean up the underneath and waxoil

I have a friend in beccles that does blasting and hes got contacts who do soda

New bonnet and bootlid/seals and few other parts been sourced and will be ordered in a few weeks, then after blasting ill get all the pindents etc cleaned up and will get her into excallibur and get her in primer, then painted in tartan red

Interior been sourced off a banger boy and in red aswell !

Chromebumpers coming also and will be rechromed with the rest the brightwork
Im happy with the car, she drove back from colchester and drove lovely although brakes are sh*te ! no crunching and its got the power there also

I ordered plugs/oilfilter etc so will just tune up the original magnete engine she has fitted

Right as i am currently between jobs atm due to telling T*ats R Us to go stick there job up there jacksy after refusing to give me a lunchbreak that I am entitled to and one of the managers making my life increasing more helish by the day I know have a few weeks whilst searching for work to get the majority of the nasty jobs on the A40 sorted

Gonna spend the day on her tommorow finishing off getting any parts removed that need to be before rubbing her down/repairing any corrosion in the main body panels and getting her in redoxide primer

Will get pics of her tommorow in her current state and condition and keep you all informed as to progress. I think I may have found a company that can manufacture bootfloors for it £105 but there all shaped and ready to weld straight in rather than me messing about with cardboard cutting/shaping trimming bits of tin and finaly welding it all in to find its still wrong ! Its all done to original specs instead and gaurenteed fitment, that will be a few weeks off yet though

Will try post again tommorow night, if you dont hear from me its cos im tied up on the car, but will see you all soon

Pete

Just been looking at pics on here

Spotted what im guessing is one of chuckies ?

http://www.turtlespeed.co.uk/picnic%20in%20the%20forest/DSC00329.JPG

Loving the colourscheme, especially like the way the chrome works so well with the black and the white roof breaks it all up

Do you reckon it would work on the A40 though

As realistically dont know if i can stretch to a full pro respray atm

As little as possible mate, I qualified as a paint sprayer and spent most my youth spraying lorries etc, worked for a while at SID in gt yarmouth before progressing on to work for Car & Commercial in Beccles as a panel beater/sprayer. I then went on from there to run a small sprayshop with one of my friends on the barnby S bends up until i was 19, Sprayings not the issue, Its a case of the equipment nowdays and the space I used to run Devilbiss topfeeding guns with clarke compressor units, suction fed masks and a dupont mixing scheme. After moving house i sat all this gear up in my garage where it was then broken into and stolen along with about 5grands worth of tools and carpanels.

I know have a babe and not got the time or cash to be out there nonstop doing the paintwork, Hence why id use rattlecan on the car to get her in satin, I can do a decent job in cans

Prepwork with the blacks gonna be the killer because it shows all the imperfections in the panels where as with the metalics and some of the flicks you can use it, If i had the cash id be using HOC on her and getting the bodywork 100% straight but in reality I know that its gonna be a while off yet before I can be doing that and TBH i dont know wether this car is the one to be wasting all that money on either. All be it a straight motor I ideally would love a Jensen Interceptor or a old healy to spend my money on and pass onto the boy to appreciate

I think ill just go Mild custom with the A40 and use her for the nats and a few meets etc

Cheers for the thought mate and ill bare you in mind for the next one

Pete

No probs Pete, unfortunatly i,m not a pro, but do a very good job at a good price, but no one ( not even John ) SID would give me a chance, plus now most bodyshops have gone over to water based paints, but Albies Taxis who i work for have not just yet which is very handy, i do agree with you about the rattle can thing, i have done panels etc in cans with no problems at all, you can get a very good finish with them, good luck with the A40, will look cool satin black, and hope to see you out and about in the new year, cheers for now Steve.
