Cheers chris, just been out and bought my first ever copy of practical classics, was at work today and on lunch decided to pop over to tesco's and get a copy and a bite to eat ! my workmates all looked at me as if to say what the hell when i got back in the canteen and was reading away !! lol, Seat covers will do the job for now i spose but It will bug me knowing the seats are that tired underneath, i spose i cann get a leather needle and sow them up and then cover them though for the time being, Im planning on subscribing to Pclassics also ( tbh part of that was the fact they give you a socket set if you subscribe ! ) where as normally I'd just buy it out the shop, I though hell if there gonna give me a draper socket set Im low on tools atm as peeps keep borrowing them I may aswell just subscribe and even if its a cheapo set its still got to be of some use to me on the car :)

Sadly it looks like the A40club has shutdown as the site says this site has been removed by admin ( or words to that effect ? ) i dont know if theres anymore dedicated Austin sites that include the A40 and the farina, I have posted on Ovalbanger chat for any spares people may have ( someones bound to race one or have in the past and have someparts kicking about somewhere ) They keep telling me to race mine But thats never ever ever going to happen !

Anyhow thanks for the help and see you soon

Pete

I know this sounds a bit sillyand with my past problems on here a bit far fetched but would anyone be willing to pop round to have a look over the car after christmas, although I have experience with newer style cars I really would like someone with mechanical knowledge that is able to check over the vehicle for safety and advise me of any work that may need addressing soon.as am wary of taking my family in it until I know it is 100% safe, Albeit having a recent Mot i have read on forums that this only gaurentees the safety of the vehicle ont he day of the test and not the current condition

I can provide beer, biscuits, sandwiches and cups of tea if anyone is willing to give up a hr or so after christmas and steer me in the right direction with the restoration

I plan to get my garage sorted after christmas and all my tools etc sorted and would be good to maybe have some Garagedays maybe a BBq etc if anyone fancys coming round in the summer

if you want to use it the first things i'd check out for your own piece of mind is the steering joints and a check of the brakes
the rest will sort out as you go along just dont rush into trying to do to many things at once

U mean no powersteering or airbags or computerised crap to go wrong aswell ! A true classic car that you can work on without having to plug it in to Nasa's computer system and reset the harddrive every 10,000 miles because some geek has decided on his pc thats the date and time its too brake !!

I cant bloody wait !! I was brought up around pinto engines and stuff like that, for the last 8cars i have had ive had to retire my tools in exchange for dealers pc systems, im quite looking forward to a car i can work on myself

Cheers for the headsup and advice

Pete

I done banger racing for several years but would never have dreamt of racing a classic. i went to watch a classic banger race in kings lynn a few years ago and saw some very nice classics getting mullered, the worst case was a 65 mustang which was absolutly solid and still had all the chrome on it, the driver even had a nice paint job done on it. the trouble was it was pouring with rain and the car was so over powered he could hardly keep it on the track and was spinning all over the place and it got battered. The whole meeting really pissed me off.

Im not a huge fan on classics getting raced unless they are completely hanging in which case I would race one or for instance a cat d or whatever it is rightoff where you cant put it back on the road for some reason or other, or if it was a complete rust pocket that would be very very incredibly stupid cash wise to repair.one of my mates Tillio raced a roller at lastyears gala night and he raced a very rare bentley ( rumour was the bentley was a complete loss on insurance and wasnt allowed to be put back on the road ) when tillio got them they were very incomplete he used a granada 2.8 engines in the roller and i think he used a 1300 crossflow in the bentley.

I have seen some rated tin getting raced though, however you also have the argument that banger boys do also help with recycling and the restoration of these cars because they often offer parts at knockdown prices or give them away for free to restorers

Its one of those topics that is very opinionated, I have all the gear here to race the A40 if i should so wish but i never would, however at the same time if another came along that for instance had a crap body and engine but had a decent interior for mine, then in that situation I would prob keep all the parts that were useable for the roadcar and race the shell, and any other parts id offer off on a forum or cheap on ebay or keep as spares.

There arent many exceptions where I would race a good classic, even when I have been stuck for cars racing and classics have come up stupidly cheap that needed work on them I didnt buy them to blitz them. Id rather not race !
