Is the heater connected and if so does it blow hot when you put it on?

just the basics, have you got Anti freeze in the rad, ot just water?

It will run hotter on water, check the rad for cold spots, it could be blocked, take it out back flush it, see it rusty water runs out.

Or an Air lock run the car up with the cap off

Dont know it that helps confused

as caddyman says could be air lock that would coincide with mr pop and the heater.
it may still be the rad though, the size may be enough but it may not have the capacity
as i had a cooling problem a while back and had to get my rad re-cored they doubled the size of the core now its a treat
