tick over problem

iv spent the morning trying to set my buick it up, it's now ticking over ok but when u put it in gear the engine starts to race,  take it out of gear it ticks over ok again. any ideas please

could be air or vac leak?

my vacuum pipes for the wipers are not hooked up at mo. but that hasn't made a difference before. would it have vac pipes going to the gearbox do u think?

It will have a vacuum pipe going to the gearbox if its an auto

yes it is auto, i will have to have another read through the manual for it.
