Didnt really want to do this but have had to admit defeat on the A40 turns out the fuel tank has excessive corrosion and cannot be repaired, a replacement tank is £140 I also need a new bootskin and bonnet skin £200 and the bootfloor has excessive rot thats also structural, Im also lead to believe the front rails are rotting out from the inside.
I have already thrown about £700 into the car and at the end the day its only going to be worth about 400 quid
So instead I have decided to cut my losses im selling all the glass and lights on ebay, the garage is being cleared and the rolling shell and engine are going to my nephew to race for the pre 70 at mildenhall,
I have just run out of time, money and patience on the car I was keen to throw my time into getting it on the road but have to admit defeat on this one, I think next time I will get one thats all complete.
For the time being I have picked up a classic from the 80s a 1989 Toyota Supra 3lite turbo running 250bhp as standard, cars in very good condition bodywise but has suffered headgasket trouble, picking up in the week ( nephews taking the a40 in exchange for the money for the fuel and use of his trailer as picking up from southend)
I will be getting another classic but atm I think i have found my dream car, always wanted a Supra and this one came along at the right money and I just had to have it. Hopefully it wont be a no goer like the a40
So sorry for those who feel I have let the scene down, wasnt my intention i did genuinely want to get the A40 done, hopefully i can however provide some useful parts to help other A40s survive out there.
Anyhow I will be at the Nats but not with A classic to show, however I may well see you at some other shows where I will be able to put my Supra in its original unmolested state on the showfield as these are getting rarer by the day aswell.
Wasnt a case of wanting to, was a case of had to, with loosing my job just before christmas and at the time hopes of being able to put the a40 back on the road reliant on that, I was chucking every penny I had on it, to be realistic i had to step back and weigh up the pros and cons, yes it would be nice to own a classic and know i rescued it but theres just too far to go on this one, And i simply dont have the time, money or patience, added to that im spending to much time on it and neglecting my family. Now wasnt the time to get the A40 after the boys come along now im spending more inside with him and watching him grow up i dont want to be out there and missing it all.
Sometimes you got to take a step back and weigh it all up
Ill get my classic one day, for the minute im happy pottering around and helping others with them, I got the supra now because im in my element, i can do the Hgasket back on the road and that will be a achievement for me in its own right, Truth is i took on to much with the A40 and it began to bleed me dry, I just decided to jump ship while i still had a bank account in credit.
Business is slow atm, nobodys buying anything and its having a adverse effect on my finances ! Nows not a good time for anyone :(
honestly mate does it matter what u drive does it matter if you own one as long as u have your health and a family it doesnt matter cars come and go u will end up gettin another one you dont need to own one to still enjoy them and at the end of the day as long as u can say u tried your hardest with the austin and tried as much as you could to get it workin there should be no porblems

Had a few of those supras, turbos and standard 3 litres, autos and manuals. The head gaskets are a nightmare on them and a pig to put right but they are nice cars. The best were the the Supra 2.8i widetrack. I had two of those and wish i never sold them. Dont like the new Supras though, they are one hell of an ugly car but i have to admit the cars i hate most at the moment are Imprezas. Every one i see has an exhaust the size of a dustbin, stupid stickers all over it and twenty twelve inch rimzzzzzz on lowered suspension that rubs like a pig on anything but billiard table smooth surfaces. Standard ones are ok though.

Headgasket wont be a problem, had several different Jap cars in parts in the bits and tbh there no different really on this than a MR2 only thing being this is 6 cylinder ill be ok aslong as I time it up properly and lock the cams in
Jist had a thought Pete. Werent your A40 mot'd when ya got it? If it was that rusty id take it back to the station that did it an ank why it was passed.
WTF is ank? hahaha i meant ask.

Do you want any of us to come an have a look over it to see if its worth doin? Im sure Tony'll come wiv me an we could see if we could save it.
Yeh i'm up for coming to have a look to see if it really is as bad as you say Pete, would be such a shame to see another classic going round the banger track!
I wondered why chucky wrote what he did, but im not a fan of banger racing at all and i didnt know what the pre 70 at mildenhall is and just "read through" it.
How can you send a classic car with 11 months mot on it around the banger track?????? Sir, you should be hung by your knackers and whipped to within an inch of your life. If you cant sort out a car as simple as the A40 how are you going to sort out that jap engine??? Rare or not those supras (and i like them too remember) are just jap iron that look sporty but have no value whatsoever. The A40 is a piece of british motoring industry that we will never have again, jap cars will always be here in their masses and be mostly worthless. Even with its chavvy wheels and k&n filters.
I cant honestly see why that A40 couldnt be saved with a welder and a bit of know how. You say you quit while your bank balance was still in the green, well it wont be after doing that jap engine i can assure you.
I may not be mr restorer of the year and i might buy cars and sell them pretty quickly but i mainly buy old stuff without MOT, get them done and on the road again before selling so at least its saved from the scrapper. Banger racers do nothing more than trash old cars that could be restored in the future. I have never, and will never watch/ed a banger race in my life.

All the useable parts will be put on ebay cheap or sold privately should anyone require them
The cars a mess underneath anyway, I needed the space, I messed my eyes up last week welding stuff on it and tbh after giving myself arc eye really bad again I dont want to be crawling under a car for gods knows how many hours welding it up i spent more time blowing holes in the ****ty tin than patching them up !
The Supra can be saved because all the parts are there to assist, there was more than a few hours on that A40, and my time and patience and bank account had been bled dry. Yes there jap crap but there getting thin on the ground too in good condition and It had to be saved. By sacraficing one car im saving another, wether it be a true brit classic or not it was still a rotten out pile of crap underneath and has bled me dry.
Nasty as it may sound, my only enjoyment now is seeing that car being destroyed to give it some of the pain and heartache it has given me, it very nearly destroyed my relationship with the misses because we were forever arguing over money I was spending on it, and in hinesight she was right to be concerned.
Yes Id love to have saved it, my intention wasnt to run it to the scrapper or race it, however cars are short on the ground racing wise and if its going to be scrapped it may aswell serve a purpose first, it would have not been worth restoring and the parts i have stripped off it will go to rescue another one. so not all bad
Not all banger boys are savages, my nephews restores old cars aswell occasionally, even with his advanced welding skills he told me its too far gone to even consider, and thats before I even offered him the chance to have it to race.
Im sure im not the only one to give up on a car due to finances/time/space and love for there family
Have a look at the 53 Hawk in our garage and that ain't going round a banger track. It's tucked up in the dry waiting for a day when Sniper has the time to sort it out.
I did used to work in a bodyshop, But even experienced welders can get arc eye !
Maybe I shouldnt say that on here but whats dones done, Ill get another classic soon so whats it matter im not the only person thats abandoned a project im sure
That's good, but do yourself a huge favour and before you buy another classic get one of the lads on here to come with you to look at the car you intend to buy. Some of these guys know a h3ll of a lot about older cars and surely it's better to get a second or third opinion.
The Fairlane was down in Plymouth, so Mike asked a good friend if he'd mind giving the car a once over before Mike starting bidding on Ebay. Our friend was only too pleased to do so, having himself got his figers burnt buying a pup of a car.
Seems theres a lot of sh*t out there before you find one that shines, I have only really ever bought one thats bad tbh and this was it, just with ebay once you bought it its yours :( although i did walk away from a mondeo last month that the bloke was trying to do me on, sometimes its worth the bad feedback
What a darn shame Pete, personally i can't stand "caveman" racing but needs must i guess!! The resto was looking good its a shame no one had the chance to give you a look as you don't see too many of them around Anyhow best of luck with the new project, even if it is a Jap motor! and i hope it doesn't hit the bank balance too hard either matey

also it has the hand/acellerator controls like on yours on mate ( or did have when my mate bought it ) as i said to him if your chucking them away ill have them for you as a spare set, i think hes either got them in the car or in his garage anyways.
my buick has been abandoned for the last 3 months as i have no money to spend on it things are tight at the mo! i got made redundant 3wks ago and we are moving soon aswell. no money and no job so the the buick may be abandoned but i won't give up on it and there is no way it will end up on the track!!!
Glad to see you sticking at it Wayne, i really think pete should have had a bit more patience with that A40. I bet it wasnt half as bad as you're saying pete, it still had MOT so couldnt have been that bad. such a shame to see another classic that could have been saved going round the banger track. maybe more modern cars like the supra you just bought are more your thing pete. It's probably best you keep away from classic cars until you can afford a real nice one if you are going to give up on it that quickly. I personally am one of the most impatient people you will ever meet but even i would'nt have given up that quickly! If you were unable to cope with getting the A40 done then you could have sold it on via ebay, even if someone bought it as a doner car for one they are restoring. Sorry, but i along with some of the others feel very disapointed at what you have done but then its your car your money etc. Shame
Few things are ever too far gone, I have just made an inner wing and "a" post for an A55 van and saved a minor 1000 which a supposed professional welder walked away from half way through trying to repair it, I had to cut off all his stuff and start again, it was sooooo rotten. Sometimes just leaving things alone for a while and coming back later makes them look easier, or get morale support from someone as daft with a welder as me. Self darkening sheild is the best invention in the whole world!!
PS I banger raced a three year old Peugeot 604 in 1983, it was an accident write off but did look good going round Foxhall, not so good when I tried to jack up an Austin 3litre with it, that did sting a bit!
we should be in are new house in 2wks all be well the best thing is i can get the buick on the front garden so hopefully spend alot more on it! it did come close to getting shot of it. but the wife gave me a hefty kick in the b...ocks!!! which brought me to my senses!!!

haha ive taken a few cars round the banger track with MOT left on them but not one that new and certainly never any classics!
Not really fi, I still speak to adz every so often, They given up doing other peoples cars now, had to many people screw them over on them, Shame really coz Gpspeed was going places, I think a lot the trouble went back to the company that messed up Vals Concept.
Dex is still doing the Electrical Switchgear for Edf and other electric companies, Adz is working for him, Think Vals still doing her usual mummy routine bless her, Daniel last I heard was doing the signage still.
Said id meet up and go see them but havent had the chance to get down there, shame coz they are great people
Had they have been nearer id have got Dex to take a look at the A40 and give me some advice.
At one point I was supposed to have been moving down there and working for them but that never materialised, Shame really coz would have been a laugh, mind you id still have been out of a job now.
Theres a lot of people on here would have looked at the 40 and given advice pete. Quite a few of these guys have helped me over the couple of years ive been a member here. Just ask mate thats all ya have to do, theyre a good bunch.

Did you leave your controls in it when you sold it then ? Would make sence why it has the controls like yours in, Pull to accelerate push to brake same handle system as in your others
Yer its like a purpley blue and has a side door that opens upwards on rams ??
It was sold to A bloke in harleston I think before Danny Sharman bought it
Ive sent Emmo a message as his misses is selling it for danny atm ill get them to email some pics over
If you Pm me your number again fella ill text you it then you can give him a call
The price I was told by Tracey was £550 - so make sharman aware that is what was said otherwise he will prob try and bump the price up !
Cars based over at harleston, It runs and drives and has mot and i think tax - If not we can prob arrange delivery somehow as between us banger boys we got a lorry big enough
Would be good if you did get it back as it is a really nice car if not I fear its going to end up on a banger track getting smashed. And it is too good for that
It also had a new rad in it and a few other bits done for last mot, which tbh its done sod all work since only carting them to the track a few times and to a few partys etc.
