any ideas

Can anyone help with any ideas as to solving my probelm. All ideas tonight will be tried early tomorrow morning in my last bid to get to the Langford show.

I have put a new starter motor on with the old mounting block off the old starter. It has 6 shims in it at the moment and as the ignition is turned on the starter comes out to engage with the flex plate but does not turn it sufficiently and seems to get stuck on the flex plate and does not retract. As i loosen the bolts that hold the mounting block to the underside of the engine block the starter spline retracts back into the starter.
This is a problem as the car started last week after we put the new starter on and it has been touched for a week but now the problem has come back.
I put a new spade connector on as the old one was loose and not giving a good connection to the battery.

All help gratefully accepted
Ta

hi there, sitting with a beer on a saturday night, i thought id ask Fly what he thinks.... he reckons; this problem could be caused by many things! I obviously don't know the history of this fault, but here are some ideas; first thing to check is integrity/continuity of earth straps- try attaching a jump lead from battery earth to the bellhousing or suitable clean metal earth as near to the starter motor body as possible. Try to crank, if it works you have an earth problem. If that doesn't work attach a volt meter between the posative terminal on the starter and a good earth, watch the meter whilst crankng, you should see between 12-10volts approx, if it is much less or tails off you have a bad connection on the power side ( battery, soleniod etc.) If it is a power problem then connect meter between battery side of soleniod ( don't know if you have a pre-engaged or inertia starter, if pre-engaged go to battery posative connector- not the post itself) and earth, the meter should show about 12volts, which will drop a little when you crank the engine, but if it drops excessivly (say less than 7volts) then you have a bad connection at the next connector back towards the battery. If you find these tests o.k. then you will probably be looking at a misalignment/mesh problem which will need competant attention. Hope that helps, please excuse any spelling mistakes- it's Saturday night and i am on the sauce! Good luck, hope you make to Langford.

Is it the correct starter for your flywheel/flexplate? From memory there  are two sizes I think 168 and 180 something? teeth, wrong starter pinion gear would cause your problem.
